Office 2007 UI: Actually Smaller

By: Nathan Weinberg

I hate it when people look at the Office 2007 user interface and dismiss it out of hand, calling it too big.

Turns out the Office 2007 UI is actually smaller than that of Office 2003. As Jensen Harris points out, the Word 2007 UI is 135 pixels, compared to 140 for Office 2003 (and that doesn't even include the mammoth space-wasting task panes, which are mostly gone).

Since even the naysayers must admit that the 2007 UI looks less messy, the fact that they were able to give the appearance of more space while using less is a testament to the skill in this product. Most people who've used 2007, including myself, believe it is going to be a big hit once people actually get their hands on it.
